Why Use Power Over Ethernet (POE) on your IP cameras

Power Over Ethernet (POE) is a technology that was standardized in 2003 and 2009 and since then it made network devices (Voip Telephony, wireless LAN, ip camera and access points) work without plugging another DC adaptor to power the network device. There are several benefits for using POE and it is laid out here in this article.

Components of Power Over Ethernet:

  1. Power Sourcing Equipment (PSE)– This equipment is the one that provides power to the cable
  2. Powered Device (PD) – The device which receives its power from the cable.
  3. Cable – medium on where power and data is passing.

Standards of POE

IEEE 802.3af – provides up to 15.4 W of DC power to every device with a 12.95W assured power due to some power loss on the cables

IEEE 802.3at – also called POE plus provides 30 W for every device with a 25.5W of assured power

Kinds of POE:

POE – Splitter – supplies power to a device but the main difference is that it does the splitting of the power from the data to a separate input that the device can use. It will have 2 cables for the output: one that is used for data and the other one for power. Splitters are useful for deploying devices such as access points that are not POE ready and where there are no nearby AC outlets

POE Injector – supplies power through the network cable to a device that is POE capable

POE Switch – supplies power through multiple ports through the network cable to a device that is POE capable

Benefits of POE:

PoE makes the task of powering devices in remote sites or locations simpler.  In one key example, PoE changes the entire cost structure for deployment of IP Cameras in an enterprise, where IP Cameras need to be placed in locations without dependency on AC outlets.

The primary and major benefits include:

  • Cost savings – Poe significantly reduces the need for electricians and technicians to install conduit, electrical wiring, and outlets on walls or posts of the building. With PoE you use only one cable which is a CAT 5 or higher UTP cable. Cost reduction is very much significant especially in a large corporation setup.
  • Flexibility – PoE appliances or devices can be located or placed anywhere without the need for AC outlets.  For example the LAN access points can be found – and relocated – on or near ceilings, to optimize the RF reception.  For example, some customers find that access points become more effective if placed on the ceiling, away from an AC outlet.
  • Reliability – Because PoE networks have lesser wires so there is less likelihood of an inadvertent power disruption (accidental shut off, etc). Without any kind of disruption to the Power Supply (UPS) power to the devices is very much secure during a power failure.
  • Network Control – Using SNMP, network administrators can monitor and control powered devices, including resetting or shut-off. This allows increased security because the devices can be powered down when not being used, or in the presence of unauthorized access.
  • Safety – Power mains are not required to be totally eliminated. Since only 48v DC is used, PoE conforms to Underwriters Laboratories (UL) Safety Extra Low Voltage (SELV) classification.

Difference between passive and active speakers and what should be used for IP CCTV

In installing your security camera system, you will also need to buy speakers to be able to do the talk back functionality. It will let users or security personnel to talk to any intruders in the area being monitored or do broadcast a message to the people within the area. There are two types of speakers used for CCTV and these are active and passive.

All types of speakers are categorized into 2 types: active and passive. This doesn’t count the numbers of drivers, type of enclosure, type of poles and other descriptions and characteristics. The speakers are classified based on how they work with the amplifier that drives them.

Passive Speakers

A great number of speakers fall into the passive kind. A passive kind of speaker does not have an amplifier built in into it. It should be connected to an amplifier to power up the speaker and hear something from the microphone of the IP Camera. The speakers’ signal levels are amplified sufficiently to be able to drive and make the speakers work properly.


  • There is another power amplifier that functions to send the complete audio signal towards the speakers
  • The audio signals are being driven separately and per amp individually
  • The crossover components are passive which means the audio signals are split and sent to every band in a direct manner to the drivers of the loudspeaker.
  • The components generally composed of arranged capacitors, inductors and resistors that split the signals.
  • Every frequency part are sent to the speakers’ drivers

In a passive speaker, users have the freedom to decide which amplifier to use or whether to upgrade their amplifier later on. Whereas with active speakers, which has a built-in amplifier basically you can no longer upgrade to other amplifiers later on. This is also why most amplifier brands are “over-built” to be able to be suitable to a wide variety of speakers.

Active Speakers

Active speakers have amplifiers built in them. These speakers are being consumed with line-level signals that pass over an interconnecting cable that starts from the controller. The advantage of active speaker they can easily be plugged in to the line out of the IP camera and its will already work. Active speakers may become limiting to your ability to choose amplifiers and tailor them to the existing audio system and they also are generally more expensive and mostly heavier.


  • Every channel is protected
  • Every driver has a dedicated amp
  • The electronic crossovers are active prior to the amps
  • The active speakers have drivers that have response controls
  • The speaker components, housing, drivers and amps are all manufactured considering each other.


For a camera surveillance system, you have to consider where your speakers are going to be placed whether indoors or outdoors. There are active and passive speakers both made for indoor and outdoor use. You just have to consider your budget as well as whether you want to upgrade your amplifiers later on. Installation wise setting up speakers is pretty easy and quick. Users generally just need to adjust the volume control after connecting it to the security camera.

How to Extend your Wi-Fi from a Far Distance

There is a way to extend your Wi-Fi connection and make your Wi-Fi IP camera become more stable especially if the Wi-Fi camera is placed on a spot beyond the coverage of the Wi-Fi signal. The Wi-Fi extender or range extender works better for devices or clients that have weaker signal strength than those that totally does not get any signal.

Important things to consider when choosing Wi-Fi range extenders:

  • The range extender should be in the range of both the device and the source of signal.
  • It would require the encryption keys associated if the corresponding signal is likewise encrypted.
  • It uses an IP address that is static which is not identifiable by the client.
  • The signal strength being broadcasted by the device will typically be the same to that of the origin or source.
  • The system operates best if the Wi-Fi extender will use the same software and chipsets to that of the access point or the base router.

The 12 V AWG 18 2 Conductor Thermostat Cable is a good choice.

Make sure the distance is not over 25 meters between the IP cam and the power source if you plan to use this cable.

3- Use the right adapter:

The required Power adapter is 12V at least 1A: Adapter 12V 2A AC DC Plug Power Supply for CCTV Security Camera System

Note: In case you will connect 2 IP Camera (CCTV) in parallel in one Power adaptor make sure that the Current (A) is higher than the required to drive current to the IP cameras. For example the required adaptor for each camera is 12V 1A, the adapter that you will select to be connected in parallel is a 12V 3A for the IP cameras to work.

The user must also use aswitching power adaptor best with voltage stabilizer

Specification: Over-Current/Short Output Protection: The power supply will withstand a continuous short output .Normal operation will resume when the short output protection has been removed.

  1. Cut the 12V AWG 18/16 2 conductor cable according to the length from the CCTV camera to the power plug. Pleasereserve extra length of wire just in case.
  2. Use the small Phillips screw driver to connect the wire to DC male connector on one end and the DC female connector on the other end.
  3. Lay the 12V 2 conductor wire from the location of the CCTV to the power plug.
  4. Next connect the DC male Connector to the CCTV power adapter end (Female).
  5. Lastly, connect the DC female connector to the power adapter end (Male).
